This research project is created by Grade 11 Seijitsu (HUMSS) students of Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai International School. The students, Khimberly Calledo and Kairyl Antipuesto, made this blog for their project in Empowerment Technologies.
Title: Nikkeisians' Budgeting Problem
Statement of the problem:
In the premise of every school, students, ranging from Elementary to Senior high school, are given their own pocket money or allowance by their parents or guardians. In a young age, they are already allowed to freely use the money they are given. They could use it on delicious food or refreshments, toys or anything a store can offer. However, a student's life is not as carefree as people think it is. As a student gets older, they begin to realize that trival things like toys, or delicious food are not what they should really focus on. As school works get harder, many students find budgeting a bit more harder than it used to be. Print outs here, photocopies there, work to do everywhere! Due to these funds, students learn to budget over time. Or is that really the case? Are students capable of prioritizing their needs?
We had chosen Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai International School and interviewed students ranging from Elementary to Senior High school. This research's interviewees said that they are given their own allowance by their parents or guardians. In their young age, they are capable in spending their allowance to buy stuffs like toys, and of course, yummy and delicious snacks. However, as a student begins to mature, they begin to think on how they should value and spend their allowance in a right and just way. They experienced paying for their own photocopies, prints, school materials, and etc. But are they capable of saving money and buying their wants in life from the total cost of all their everyday spend? Based on the research's data, most students replied that their allowances are normally spent on food. And it is followed by their outings then their transportation and others. On the other hand, few replied that they are able to put some of their allowance into their savings.
Hypothesis
We, the researchers, assume that the students of Nikkei Jin
Kai International School can budget their allowances and possess the ability to
prioritize their needs before attending their wants. We also believe that most
students are capable of saving their money.
Data Analysis
Based on the data that we have gathered through survey, most
students have replied that their allowances are normally spent on food. A few
answered they used their money on outings, transportation and others. However,
we noticed that only a few replied that they are able to put their allowance into
their savings.
Conclusion
Students, even back in the day, are given pocket money by
their parents so that they will be able to afford what they need in school.
This pocket money is often used by students to buy food, refreshments, toys,
etc. However, there will always be a time where students are not able to budget
their money properly and it normally does not end well for them. As a result,
most of them were able to learn from their mistakes and are normally cautious
of what they are going to spend their money on. Sadly, this does not apply to
everybody. Some students still make mistakes in budgeting their money and would
not learn from it at all. Therefore, we conclude that further research or a
simple action such as giving advice to the lower years should be implemented.
